The
two biggest influences in my life as an artist
were Andrew Wyeth and Ansel Adams. My passion
is creating evocative art forms, which combine
human presence with natures mystery
and elegant simplicity. My formal studies
in photography began at the University of
Santa Clara where I benefited from having
my work critiqued by Ansel Adams.
My photographs were first published in the
Sierra Clubs International magazine
in 1978. Since then, I have had photographs
published in a variety of magazines throughout
the country. My work is shown in private and
corporate collections worldwide. The Smithsonian
Institution has preserved a series of my garden
photographs in their Archives of American
Gardens collection. In 2002, some of my garden
photographs will be included in a Smithsonian
Traveling Exhibition, entitled Feast Your
Eyes: The Unexpected Beauty of Vegetables.
I began to show my work at juried art shows
in 1985 and have had the privilege of receiving
numerous awards at shows throughout the United
States. I personally hand print each of my
color photographs, using Kodak, Konica, and
Fuji papers, depending on the results I am
seeking. |

Lou's
first professional photography gig was working
for the ACLU as a street photographer during
the political unrest of the late 1960's. From
that experience he acquired enough technical
skill to become a commercial photographer.
Primarily working in advertising doing tabletop
and still-life work, the use of special effects
and whimsical humor became intrical to the
compositions he started to create. In 1980
he began exhibiting in local galleries and
outdoor art fairs. Early exhibits included
participation in The Chicago and Vicinity
Photographic Show at the Art Institute of
Chicago. For the last 20 years, he has exhibited
primarily at the major outdoor art events
in the Midwest .
Commissions
include a poster for the Grant Park symphony
orchestra of Chicago in 1981 and his work
appears in many permanent collections including
many hospitals, the Borg-Warner Corporation,
the McDonalds Corporation, Standard Oil of
New Jersey, and the Saint Louis Aquarium.
